Advancing Heat Conversion – From Component Scale to System Level

HELOKA-Upgrade Storage (US) is an experimental research platform for investigating thermal-hydraulic phenomena in molten salt under steady-state, transient and non-nominal operating conditions. It facilitates the development, testing and qualification of thermal energy systems using molten salt including essential components, as well as instrumentation and measurement technologies. HELOKA-US allows the evaluation of Balance-Of-Plant (BOP) concepts and the assessment of system-safety-related aspects by the experimental investigations of thermal-hydraulic system behavior.

Molten salt is an envisaged heat transfer fluid, fuel, and storage medium in challenging energy systems such as fusion reactors (in primary and intermediate heat transfer system including thermal energy storage loop, breeder unit, intermediate heat exchanger and steam generator), molten salt-cooled/fueled reactors (in the reactor core, primary and secondary loop with the relevant heat exchangers) and industrial process heating (in thermal energy storage systems).  

The superior goal is the provision of reliable, predictable, and determinable supply of thermal energy, heat and thermal storage capacity in fusion reactors, gen4 reactors, and industrial processes. Research topics in HELOKA-US at KIT cover both the component level and system levels, including cross-cutting activities in the research programme FUSION and NUSAFE:

1) Development of BOP concepts representing the interconnected power conversion chain from components to plant level including an intermediate heat transfer system for flexible power generation.

2) Validation and development of thermal-hydraulic system models for describing complex fusion power plant components to be integrated into BOP framework (from heat extraction in breeding blankets over intermediate circuits for flexible net electrical output of the power conversion system and Power-2-X).

3) Investigation of phenomenology relevant to the design of HCPB BOP components occurring in an environment with a pulsating power source (frequent thermal cycling due to heating/cooling) or for load-following mode operation.

Technical Description

The HELOKA-US facility comprises a molten salt loop (operating temperatures between 200 °C and 465 °C; 7 bar) representing a two-tank thermal energy storage system, a nitrogen and venting system, and a high-temperature water cooling loop (operating temperatures between 160 °C and 220 °C; 45 bar). The heat transfer media is mixture of alkali nitrites and nitrates: KNO₃ (53%), NaNO₂ (40%) and NaNO₃ (7%). It is a chemically identical molten salt than HITEC with a permitted temperature range from 142°C to 550°C, whereby the temperature range is limited by solidification at low temperature and degradation at high temperatures.  The molten salt loop includes two geometrically identical molten salt storage tanks (hot and cold; height: 2620 mm; diameter: 700 mm; volume: 0.9 m³), an internal electrical heater (30 kW) in the hot tank, two centrifugal magnetic-coupled pumps (nominal flow rate: 0.92 kg/s) placed at the cold leg, upstream of an external electrical heater (285 kW) acting as heat source, a molten salt/water heat exchanger acting as a heat sink (240 kW) downstream the hot tank, as well as several isolation and control valves, and numerous measuring devices for tank level, mass flow rate, pressure, and temperature. An additionally heatable, multipurpose test section for heat transfer coefficient determination is installed between the electrical heater and the hot tank. The loop is fully equipped with trace heating and thermal isolation material for maintaining the operational temperature range of the molten salt.
