  • Description:

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) a small family of sodium test facilities called SOLTEC (SOdium Loop for TEst Corrosion and materials) has been developed for the experimental qualification of new materials aimed for high temperature applications in the Concentrating Solar Power field.

The SOLTEC-2 facility, aimed for corrosion investigations of high temperature materials, has been put recently into operation and the maximal operating temperature of 700°C has been achieved.

The scope of the study is the numerical investigation of the sodium (liquid) and argon (gas) flows within the facility. A numerical grid (e.g. using Pointwise grid generator) and numerical model (e.g. ANSYS CFX) are to be developed. Different scenarios are to be simulated, for steady state and transient operational conditions. The numerical results shall be validated against the experimental data that are already available.
